Adora and Catra's relationship was an endgame set in stone from the very beginning of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power - but WHY does it work?

This ship never clicked with me, imo the relationship in of itself kinda weird at the get go because of their dynamic which worsened in the show. If anything I believe they should've not gotten together in the end. She has done waaaay too much for that and was forgiven too easily , you can't convince me her redemption arc was good. It would've been much better if catra confessed but was rejected , have Adora tell catra that while she's proud of her catra has hurt her and her friends to much for her to consider a relationship at the moment. Or something that I feel would've broken the mold would be to have catra not confess. She wants to obviously , but she realizes that she needs to truly work on herself so she can become a person that she is proud of, someone that could be selfless for the people or in this case person she loves. This show, mostly catra, were such a disappointment to me. I feel they had really great ideas and character moments (catra backtracking on her emotions was an interesting way to show an example of someone who is both a victim and an abuser), but they always dropped the ball. I feel for me, and a lot of people who don't like this pairing or the show for that matter , is that catra just did so much that her "redemption " felt too easy. Take Zuko for example (cuz every cartoon wants to have one wo understanding why he's great). Here's a child who lived a terrible life, his one goal the one thing that would make his problems go away , is to kill someone. But we see early on that there isn't maliciousness there. Hell, early on zuko had many opportunities to kill /hurt aang but he always let him go(or didn't try THAT hard to pursue him that was what azula was for). They planted the seeds early and kept zukos crimes relatively minor in comparison to catra that made it more believable . It also took like four seasons and hard work on himself for zuko to be trusted. I would bring up vegeta but that's kinda irrelevant and vegeta is like his own category at this point (love him tho). I just feel they could've done more. Catra is inherently interesting as she's a main character with the perspective of someone who never had that positive role model (think uncle iroh or uncle Ben). This is a fascinating thing to do with a character especially since you still have to find a way to make them entertaining and likable. And they did succeed up to a point and then it just became to much for me. Obviously my opinions are my own and if you enjoyed how it ended , that's great. I just felt they dropped the ball by having it end with a fanfic moment and I feel a better more realistic approach would've been to continue catras redemption in either a movie or preferably another season. When I finished this show I rated it a shame/out of ten. It had so much potential and it just didn't quite reach it.

I think I understood something wrong. It looked like you said that Catra just helped Glimmer escape because she knew Adora would come back for them and that would be the only way to be saved from the Horde Prime. But i don't think that's what you said and I understood wrong so can someone explain please 😂 i am dumb!
Ephemeral Snow
Ephemeral Snow 15 күн мурун
She already resigned herself to the thought that she was completely worthless and didn't matter. When Glimmer asks her "what about you" she pretty much puts it into words. With this "I only hurt people, there's no one in the entire universe who cares about me" Catra wanted to go down by doing one good thing with the intention of dying and hoping it would negate all the bad things she did.

Ephemeral Snow
Ephemeral Snow Ай мурун
Adora "broke" their promise what it contained was a plan layed out for the future they made their own little unit in the cruel Horde hoping that one day they could call the shots and make the abuse(mostly from Catra's part) they both endured stop . However it was the *only* thing Catra had, something she desperately clutched onto. She gets betrayed When Adora was willing to throw *everything* away when they made it this far over the life. Of some "strangers" it completely disregards her feelings in that sense. Because Catra prioritized Adora but felt deeply hurt when she didn't expect it in return.

Funny how those comments who replied that they have toxic relationship or that catra is toxic don't even have any valid premises to back it up. They just say it's toxic or that it's bad because they read it somewhere. I grew up being verbally and physically abused by my father and that erased my self-confidence and trust in people when I went to college. I fought with my brother a lot when we were kids, even driving a pen on his back. Albeit I didn't nearly destroy the world like catra did, I did lash out at my parents like any rebellious kid did and had my own way of handling my emotions, one of them was by cutting. But I met great friends along the way and they gave me enough confidence to open up a bit more. There's no more cutting but suicidal thoughts never seem to go away. I've already forgiven my father after we had a heart-to-heart talk; if it weren't for that talk, i'd still be carrying that grudge around and my father wouldn't have a catalyst to try and better himself. And that latter would have been more harmful, not being able to move forward and possibly doing more damage to other people in the future. Anyway, you can't stop the cycle of abuse without you confronting yourself first and seeking help. People saying that catra is toxic even after season 5 is like saying that people who grew up in a toxic childhood will forever be toxic regardless of any effort to help themselves. Besides, one can't be toxic if the other isn't, there's always an enabler in any relationship. I bet you those that claim their exes are toxic never even see themselves as toxic in their relationship as though they are free of fault.

As someone who had already been spoiled in their relationship before watching the series, I can say that her redemption was honest and realistic. Season 3 made me think she was a hopeless case and i never could imagine how the writers would go about redeeming her character but they did along the way. Big part of how they were able to do it rest with the establishment of their characters and relationship in S1 and S2. You just have to be able to think critically while watching it.

Anybody who thinks catra was pretending to be good in the last season didn't pay any attention to catra's character during the full five seasons we got to know her and her back story, catra did all the things she did because she felt lonely and abandoned, and when she was given the chance in the final season to open up again, she does it and you see her mental state drastically improve, she'd always cared about she ra, she was just afraid of intimacy

there's not enough timeslot of them working on their feelings when etheria is on the verge of being destroyed. Imagine them working on their emotions while horde prime is destroying communities on the background lol. Unless you're suggesting that they slow the pace of the overall atmosphere and show every development of her relationships with the people around her. That story would have just fillers in order to portray this part.

Catra is a toxic abusive person and her and Adora being a thing after everything Catra did to her sends of a wrong message if it comes to the issues of abusive relationships. Yes, gay relationships can be abusive too. Her "redemption" was handled poorly as well. Also she is the reason why Glimmer has no mother anymore. Funny how little they care about Angela and her faith. The relationships in this show are written messy in general. The characters barely talk things out and feel pretty one-dimensional. If this show wasn't used for representation then I doubt anyone would really care about it too much.

i have no issue with catra being redeemed and overcoming her trauma and rekindling her bond with adora, however i feel like it was forced because that "dont you see? i love you" was totally out of left field, there was no time for their relationship to develop since they'd just recently began to trust each other again and be comfortable being friends. The only sign of them having really strong feelings for each other after Catra being saved from Horde Prime was when she jumped into the "fire." It's not bad overall, they just rushed the finish.

I don’t think Catra was just changing, but also finding out WHO she truly was as a person. She had kept up her barriers 4 so long that she never knew how 2 express the soft, kind or vulnerable sides of herself - despite the fact that it’s those exact traits that often lead 2 connections with others. (Since she was with Adora from a very young age she more than likely formed their friendship before she developed her emotionally closed off mentality) Once she finally let herself feel those emotions, it became easier each time she did so & knew that it had always been a part of her true self 🥰

I honestly don't know that Catra was "redeemed" or anything like that. She's not good. But she's also not just bad. She's Catra. She always was, and she still is. Adora came back for her because, well, she has the hots for Catra and that makes you do stupid things. I think both Bow and Glimmer understood that underlying motive, and were willing to go the extra mile because Adora has earned it. Conversely, Adora going back for her was the one thing Catra can't deny to herself as having any reason other than that Adora really wants her. It's strategically idiotic, tactically difficult, and had no real, obvious advantages for anyone other than herself. So at the time when she hated everything about herself and the world, Adora came back with an unmistakable gesture and she starts hoping there can be more. Catra isn't the first person to make friends with former enemies for the sake of some potential cuddle time, and she won't be the last. But my read on it is that primarily, she was more positive when she came back because she now has hope where before she only had despair. That said, I AM a guy, and if Catra were a guy, it would make total sense like that. She's not, so I can't claim to any special insight or whatever.

I love the final season and especially the way Catradora was handled, but I feel like Catra's redemption arc would've been even better if she was forced to confront her worst mistakes - as in, the ones that actually resulted in DEATH. Honestly, I was waiting all season for Glimmer to confront Catra about how she effectively killed her mom and, similarly, for Mermista to bring up the attack that reduced her kingdom to rubble, coordinated and executed, at least in part, by Catra herself. It would've been a satisfying progression of the arc for Glimmer to have chosen not to forgive Catra, but have had that not dampen her resolve to get better or be kinder to her regardless. It would've been equally as appropriate to have had Mermista try to turn the others against Catra, using the attack as leverage, until Catra was forced to think about the people she hurt outside of the friend group she was being integrated into and struggling to comprehend the full gravity of that while she didn't even know the names of the civilians affected. Unfortunately, the potential of these characters to be roadblocks to the redemption feeling too easy were taken out early on; Mermista was brainwashed before Catra was able to see her again and Glimmer just...didn't mention her mother. Huh. That didn't feel very in character for that passionate hothead, now did it? I'm biased when it comes to Catra because I adore her as a character - in fact, she's easily one of my favorite characters in, well, anything - but she did some undeniably horrible things and, whether or not she thought she was in the right at the time, she needed to be held accountable for this redemption arc to feel fully earned. I mean, she literally tried to annihilate her entire reality! If this weren't a cartoon, i.e. someone actually tried to accomplish this in the real world, it would be completely unforgivable, personal circumstances be darned. The only reason it remotely felt like she could come back from that, at least to me, was that she wasn't doing it because she was some deranged serial killer out for mass death of the innocents; she just wanted to get back at Adora and wasn't within the mental state to comprehend any immediate implications beyond that she was finally "triumphing" over her. Now, even though her choice at the portal could be interpreted as unforgivable, I don't believe that forgiveness and redemption are interchangeable concepts; I think someone can do something vial, be condemned for it, and still come out a healthier, happier, less destructive person. The important bits, from my perspective, are that they have to want to change, that they actually have to work at it, and that they need to be willing to take responsibility for what they've done in the past. Catra had the first two parts down very well, but she wasn't forced to undergo the third one, at least not as much as she should've been in consideration of the severity of her worst choices. No one was considering that she might've not deserved to get off that easily; literally everyone in the cast either forgave her or didn't confront her. Overall, though, it was seriously awesome. I love this show.

@AkitaMixx I disagree on the basis that her mother wouldn't have been forced to consider sacrificing herself to begin with if it weren't for Catra. The choice was literally either herself or Adora, and we know it couldn't have been Adora because she played a fundamental role in saving Etheria in the final season. Arguably, Angella didn't know that Adora would go on to save everyone if she sacrificed herself, but she *did* see how Adora had also been important in protecting everyone up to that point. Disregarding her admirable selflessness, probably also a factor in her decision, she knew that everyone was dead without Adora/She-Ra; she didn't really have much of a choice. As for how this affects Glimmer's character arc, I honestly don't think her progress needed to extend to her former mortal enemy to still be believable. To me, it wasn't about her moving on so much as was about taking responsibility for what she has already done by allowing herself to be vulnerable again, following the main mistake of season 4, which was to do the opposite: render herself "invulnerable" by doubling down on taking an authoritative role. Just to clarify, I don't think Glimmer needed to go through the whole season seething with rage at Catra, but it does feel pretty weird that she didn't address any of her cruelty even once. On Catra's end, it's a huge missed opportunity for securing her redemption because it would've forced her to confront the fact that she hurt more people than JUST her personal friends, Adora and, to a lesser extent, Scorpia and Entrapta.
AkitaMixx
AkitaMixx 2 ай мурун
Glimmer confronted her grief by pushing away people that resulted in her being in Prime Horde's ship. There she had realization of what she did to her friends and her turning point from what happened to her mother. You are also forgetting the fact that her mother ultimately made that sacrifice, else all of them are dead anyway. If she was still furious at catra in the ship, her moving forward wouldn't be as believable. You can be civil to a person without necessarily forgiving them. I don't think Catra wouldn't know that. Catra working her way out in order to be forgiven by each and everyone of them would require more seasons for obvious reason. And not while the world is on the verge of being destroyed.

I don't think things are settled between Catra and Adora - or between any of the other characters - at all. Remember when Mermista turned to Sea Hawk and asked "So are we all just like ok with this?" when she saw Entrapta and Hordak walking together. That last couple of minutes of the show were showing everyone in a state of euphoria after the war finally ended, but that shit never lasts. We'll probably never see it, but there's lots of reckonings still to come. If you've ever been in a stormy, off-and-on relationship, you know Catra and Adora are gonna have some (maybe lots) of rough nights ahead of them. 💖💔💖

At Catra's lowest point, completely defeated, having lost everything abd everyone, basically asks Glimmer to kill her. That is the point of reset for her character. She tries to fall on old habits to survive and having everything stripped away was only left with protecting Adora, the person she couldn't keep herself from loving. AND, this presumably isn't the end of her redemption arc if there is more content produced for the series.

Season 3's finale was her biggest fuckup to date, so the entirety of Season 4 was basically about taking her down ALL of the pegs. Double Trouble was just the final gutpunch of an entire season's worth of breakdowns and beat downs. So it was totally fair for S5 to be all about building herself back up.

I was mad like I did not want them to get together I honestly wanted catra to die as a sacrifice similar to what shadow wear or did and that would've given adora some clarity to use her powers. But once I watched it, I was very satisfied. They handled her character development even once she was redeemed she still struggled with herself and they struggled with each other. It was well done.

while I REALLLY hoped we got to see more of double trouble, I love how they were literally the turning point in the story. Catra, staring at herself (obviously DT who shapeshifted) talking about how she was really feeling being said aloud made a difference. Once DT basically admitted what Catra was feeling for so long, Catra definitely had a shift of heart, she started questioning her morals and her actions. This obviously definitely paid off with her conversation with Glimmer. Glimmer made her realize Adora never BETRAYED Catra, Adora realized how toxic and manipulative and wrong the Horde was, and how she could fight for the better WHILE having good relations with people. Whereas to Catra, due to all of the abuse from shadow weaver, she thought Adora leaving her was because she didn't trust her to stay. It's all so well done man, I still don't understand why people think the characters and stories aren't 'well done'. there is so much thought put into ALL the characters. especially Catradora. the ending was so satisfying and just felt *right.*

Lately I've noticed quite a few people irked by Catra's toxicity and "poor decision making" throughout the series, specifically with her choice to not just leave the horde in the premiere as she was already aware she was being manipulated. I personally feel like people who fail to explain _why_ Catra felt the need to stay with the horde as opposed to just leaving with Adora when the both of them knew that's not what she really wanted just ends up making Catra's decisions seem more petty than I think they actually are. As we all know, while Adora was raised as the golden child and inheritor of the horde, Catra faced regular abuse and was constantly pitted against Adora by Shadow Weaver because SW felt that their emotional involvement with each other would jeopardize Adora's "destiny". For years, Catra pushes this resentment down for the sake of maintaining her relationship with Adora as seen in the training flashback in "Promise". She'd put on a mask in front of Adora, but would cry alone knowing how every time she's perceived as "second best", the more weight Shadow Weaver's words hold over her. By the time the season 1 premiere comes around, Catra and Adora are still close, but we now know of the underlying tension in their relationship and Catra's ingrained inferiority complex that stems from knowing that her only parental figure (who Catra still cares about) would be willing to "dispose" of her if she's a distraction to the person she believes to be her closest friend. When Adora reveals that she was chosen as force captain in the premiere, Catra is clearly bothered by it and later climbs to the top of the Fright Zone where she later brushes it off while talking to Adora just as she did in the Promise flashback. The straw that broke the camel's back for Catra was of course Adora discovering that she's She-Ra. At this point, not only does Catra feel as distant as ever from her perceived status of Adora, but now, as She-Ra, she's actively fighting against those who Catra believes is on her side even though she hardly stood up for her knowing she was being abused. Even in episode 1, Adora criticizes Catra for not acting respectful towards Shadow Weaver despite knowing good and well where the two of them stood. "You've known these people for a couple hours, and you're going to throw everything away for.. them? The premiere was the Catalyst for Catra to surpass Adora by any means necessary to prove to Shadow Weaver, Hordak, and herself that she's stronger than anyone believed she was (by season 5, she's the strongest non-magic user on Etheria). For the rest of the series up until season 4, Catra's fueled by spite and her abusive past to become everything she was told she needed to be. She craved power, not because it was what she desired (as Double Trouble put it best), but because she never wanted to feel weak again. By clawing her way to the top of the horde, she believed that she'd be in a position where no one could hurt, belittle, or doubt her ever again. The reason she stayed with the horde in season 1 is the same reason she returned to the horde in season 3 after being happy in the crimson waste. The hurt and trauma was something she never got better from, and she believed the only way to overcome that was through acquiring power and proving her strength by any means necessary regardless of how it hurt others or herself. That's where Catra's toxicity came from. In no way am I attempting to absolve her of her actions as her choices were ultimately her own, and I couldn't care less about how someone else feels about her, but if you don't attempt to empathize and understand why characters do what they do in this show, specifically characters who were previously aligned with the horde and tried to do better, then they'll never be seen as anything more than what they've done.

Great thoughts! I actually think Catra's reason for breaking from Adora goes even deeper. When Adora has her "are we the baddies?" moment in s1e2, Catra's response is "well duh" - because Catra was a direct victim of the Horde's violence throughout her childhood (while Adora is an abuse victim as well, her abuse was more manipulation than direct physical violence). Catra knows exactly what the Horde is and has accepted it to survive, while Adora never figured it out. So when Adora tells Catra basically "I'm leaving because these people are innocent and deserve protection from the Horde", Catra hears an implied "but you are not and do not" - all of a sudden Adora sees the Horde are evil after just hanging out with Bow & Glimmer for a day but never realized it when Catra was an innocent victim? Of course, this shatters against Catra's long-standing insecurity that Adora would never love her back as much as Catra loved her, and she copes the way she always had - by doubling down on violence to solve her problems, first by trying to kidnap Adora back and then by trying to burn everything down. Her growth into season 5 is so compelling and cathartic because she is forced to confront the fact that her lashing out drives her friends away, even when they are trying to help her. Even as the Horde is winning battles her last friends are jumping ship, and it takes DT and Glimmer to finally get through to her For me the emotional climax of her whole arc is s5e5, when Entrapta is about to remove her chip and she simply asks Adora to "please, stay." - for the first time ever, when a friend is about to walk away, Catra FINALLY acknowledges her vulnerability and asks them to choose to stay, instead of driving them away or trying to force them to stay.

Having recently rewatched the series, I want to say that finding out about Shadow Weaver's defection in the Crimson Waste was the thing that truly pushed Catra into a self-destructive spiral where she was constantly hurting while basically turning her life into a sunk cost fallacy. She was already angry at Adora for leaving her, but was absolutely crushed by finding out that "mom" still chose Adora. Then, after the portal incident, she was constantly justifying her actions with "if I just do this one thing, all the bad things I've already done (and all the pain I've endured for it) will have been worth it."

I wish that catra's redemption wasn't so centerend around Adora tho, like, it never really was about the damage that she did to etheria, and to be honest I think the end would have been better if catra have taken more time for herself, since she never was "friend" of adora in a healthy context

@bleachchill’s Live-streams Or maybe it's good because kids who know they're different can have positive representation and feel more safe and included instead of feeling alone and scared. I knew I was different by age 7, I would have loved to have something like this to watch. Also... wtf are you talking about? Anime is _very_ LGBTQ+ supportive. Way more so than western media. Yuri and Yaoi are entire genres of anime in themselves. I've seen LGBTQ+ relationships in popular animes and mangas that aren't even geared towards that audience. I don't know what animes you're watching/mangas you're reading that you've never even seen one. Japan isn't that homophobic, and their media reflects that. Like, sorry to burst your bubble and all but it's the truth lol. When your opinion is homophobic we don't appreciate it :)

Catra was acting how she was raised to until she was confronted with how self destructive she was being. She took a little while to warm up to the idea, but eventually realized that the way she understood human interaction (the violent competitiveness of the Horde) was not accurate. When she did, she sought change instead of continuing to lash out. That's what makes her redeemable.

I call bullshit on that. Because Catra and Adora were raised together. And you can tell from their flashbacks that Catra was the fucking worst even as a kid! *WITHOUT* Shadow Weaver's intervention! And, with the way Shadow Weaver treated Catra, you would think she would jump at the chance to run away from it all with Adora. But I guess part of that is Shadow Weaver's instilling in her that she is worthless, so she always chooses whichever decision hurts herself the most. But that also doesn't make sense, because she still does things to get promoted through the horde. Though, that was mostly failing upwards....

I personally was okay with the idea of Catra and Adora being a couple in the end of the series. They were close since the start of series and even when they were enemies they were still connected, just not in a positive way. Here's my personal summary of the relationship between Adora and Catra throughout the series: Season 1: Catra and Adora start out as close friends, but what really causes a rift between the two is when Adora chooses to leave the horde. Adora clearly wants Catra to come with her but she refuses. Catra does show signs of still caring about Adora, but between her jealousy towards Adora's new friends and her abusive relationship with shadow weaver who shows favoritism towards Adora, it's no wonder that Catra becomes Adora's enemy by the end of the season. Season 2: Adora and Catra more or less have a rivalry during this season. Adora herself has admitted that Catra knows her well enough to know how to take her out, and Adora is somewhat obsessed with trying to one up Catra. Catra on the other hand isn't entirely focused on Adora as much as she's trying to win. Catra does still show signs of bitterness over Adora leaving. Catra also starts accepting friendship with Scorpia, despite still having a connection with Adora. Shadow Weaver complicates things by using Catra to escape, and ultimately ending up where Adora is at the end of the season. Season 3: This is the season where the relationship between Adora and Catra really gets complicated. Catra goes through a rough time after Shadow Weaver used her to escape, and Hordak sends her to the crimson waste hoping she doesn't return. The major turning point is when Catra learns that Shadow Weaver left her for Adora. This really shows how Shadow Weaver is responsible for so much of the damage in the relationship between Adora and Catra, but at the same time Catra also has to take some of responsibility, as does Adora. Catra chose to open the portal despite Adora warning her against doing so mainly because she felt Shadow Weaver abandoned her for Adora. This causes reality itself to be at risk on Etheria. Despite Adora not wanting to leave Catra and wanting them to stay together, Catra still refuses and there's only so many times Adora can deal with Catra pushing her away. Ultimately Adora does reach her breaking point when Catra blames Adora for everything. Adora fights back and states that Catra made her choice has to live with it. Not only that, but to save Etheria Queen Angela has to sacrifice herself which definitely affects Adora. I was convinced by the end of this season that Adora and Catra would never be friends again, especially after the angry stare She-Ra gives to Catra. Season 4: There were not that many interactions between Catra and Adora this season since the focus was mostly on the relationship between Adora and Glimmer. It's clear that Adora is still mad at Catra for what she did in the last season, but surprisingly we see signs that Catra might actually regret what she did since it cost her Adora. We see signs of Catra breaking down this season, such as asserting herself as Hordak's partner rather than his second-in-command, using a shape-shifting spy to get an edge over the princesses, and pushing Scorpia away which causes a further mental breakdown. After defeating Hordak, Catra is forced by her shape-shifting spy double trouble to really look at herself, and to realize that what she's been doing up until now was not what she wanted. By the end of the season, Catra really has lost everything, before she, Hordak, and Glimmer are taken by horde prime. Season 5: I was really surprised that Catra and Adora were able to fix their relationship and make it better than before. This was the season that really showed how much Catra and Adora meant to each other. Catra is shown to try to work her way to horde prime's good graces with her usual tactics, but deep down I think Catra knew she was out of her depth. Also horde prime was able to easily notice that Catra still had feelings for Adora, even if Catra tried to deny it. At this point Catra feels lonely to the point of actually hanging out with Glimmer and remembering good times with Adora. When put into a position by horde prime to betray Glimmer or have her mind controlled, Catra at first does so out of fear of horde prime, but because of her feelings towards Adora, feelings she could no longer deny, Catra decides to help Glimmer escape, mainly because she wants to save Adora. The first conversation that Adora and Catra have this season definitely shows that despite everything that happened between them, they still cared about each other. Catra even genuinely apologized to Adora. After rescuing Glimmer and getting fuel for their ship, Adora decides to rescue Catra because she can't leave her behind. The emotions Adora feels when she confronts a mind controlled Catra showed that she really cared about Catra. When Catra regains control of herself, Adora admits that Catra matters to her. It was ultimately Catra being at the brink of death that allowed Adora to access the true power of She-Ra. Rescuing Catra was definitely an emotional moment for both Catra and Adora, which makes Adora a little bit more protective of Catra for the rest of the series. Sadly, Catra doesn't make things easy for her and Adora, despite the fact that Adora admits that she never hated Catra, even after everything she did, which I actually think is true. Adora was rightfully upset with Catra, but the fact that Adora still tried to save Catra and showed so much emotion for her definitely proves that Adora didn't hate Catra. Catra still pushes Adora away (possibly because of self-loathing), which frustrates Adora, but when it reaches the point where they could lose each other for good, Catra chooses to not let that happen, which is ultimately the first step to repairing their relationship. Afterwards we see Catra trying to be better and Adora being happier. Of course Shadow Weaver has to complicate matters close to the end. One of the saddest scenes in this season is when Catra leaves and Adora is devastated by it. We clearly see afterwards that the two really want to be with each other. Catra chooses to be there for Adora when she needs her. Adora and Catra even cry over shadow weaver's death together. By the time Catra and Adora tell each other "I love you " and kiss, you feel that they earned it after everything they've been through, good times and bad times. In conclusion, while Adora and Catra have been through some rough times in their relationship, there's still plenty of good moments they've had that actually shows how their relationship works. It was ultimately the love of Catra and Adora that saved the universe.

I didn't like the redemption and I think that it's mainly cos it was centered too much around Adora and not about regretting and feeling bad about all the damage that she did to etheria, that's why I would have prefered that after the kiss in the end catra ended up taken more time working on herself in a healthier context (not a war) before jumping on a relationship.

Toxic people are capable of redemption, but let’s be honest - they usually don’t. It’s more likely, IMO, that a toxic person uses redemption as a cloak for continuing toxic behavior. Hell, I think it’s more likely for a toxic individual to drive others into toxic behaviors of their own than to change and improve. Toxic people are more likely to propagate toxicity than reduce it, but that doesn’t mean they should be denied the opportunity to change. And it’s just as difficult to prove sincerity in that change as it is to trust someone with a history of toxicity. Is it worth it? Often not, but that’s only an opinion.
AkitaMixx
AkitaMixx 2 ай мурун
You're right, you can't be toxic without someone enabling you or raising you to be one. So is the person the only toxic one in this case? If I meet someone who claims their ex were toxic, chances are they were also toxic. Frankly in my opinion, we all have acted and behaved toxically with our relationships and those around us whether we noticed it or not. There's simply no standard guide on how not to be toxic that were given to us when we're born, especially when it comes to handling emotions. If you claim to have never been toxic all your life, that in itself is toxic thinking. You're suggesting the same as morality does, there's the "good" people who are never toxic then there's the "bad" people, and nothing in between.

@ChasehaWing Yeah, a lot of the things you just described could very well apply as Slytherin traits too. Loyalty = Fraternity: Somehow it never gets discussed, but loyalty is a trait that applies to Slytherins as well. Thing is, they're only loyal to the people that they care about. The rest of the world, they're not so concerned with and it can burn for all they care, but they take care of their own, end of story. Puffs are loyal, but their loyalty kind of applies to everyone. It's the kind of loyalty where you support everyone by default until they give you a reason not to. Catra's not like this. Her brand of loyalty is one where she only becomes ride or die after you first work your way past her walls and begin to mean something to her. She doesn't put herself at risk for just anyone, which is something that a Puff _would_ do. Her loyalty is much more in line with the cliquish vibe of Slytherin fraternity than anything else. Good Finder: Don't think this is really a determinate trait of Hufflepuffs. I know it's mentioned in the musical, but it has never been mentioned anywhere in the books. Doesn't seem like a characteristic that would tell anyone anything about who a person is at their core or what they're about. Unafraid of toil = Ambition/Determination (and in Catra's case, Self-Preservation): Catra works hard, that much is true, but the reason _why_ she works so hard is specifically to achieve her goals. She wants to move up in the Horde, she wants to gain power. That's her drive behind all the work she puts in, which is what Slytherin's are about. Catra works hard not because it's an inherent part of being in the Horde and she's willing to do it, but because that the best way for her to get what she wants. And the reason why she wants to be on the top is both because she wants to prove she's able and because being on top means no one (e.g Shadow Weaver) will ever have the power to hurt her ever again (and that's where that self preservation ties into this). In season 5, Catra's goals shift from accruing power to making amends for her wrongdoings and being better with people. And she puts just as much work into achieving these goals as she did the ones she had when she was in the Horde. (Note that the literal definition of ambition is a strong desire to do or achieve something that requires determination and hard work.) Patience = Cunning/Resourcefulness: First off, I wouldn't say Catra waited 15 years to take down Shadow Weaver. Before Adora left, Catra was content (but not really) to let Adora be the one to work her way up and Catra would benefit by being the best friend of the one in power. It's not until Adora left that Catra actively started working towards replacing Shadow Weaver. And once she did, she was anything but patient about it. She managed to replace SW not by waiting her out, but by being more resourceful than her and using that to her advantage. SW failed once again at getting Adora back? Make a plan to kidnap her friends to get to her (managing to put the Horde in a position of power over the rebellion while doing so). Adora escaped? Let SW take the blame for the whole thing (thus lowering her credibility and allowing Catra to be viewed as a better prospect). Found a princess in the vents? Convince her her friends left her behind and put her to work developing tech. Once Catra knows what she wants and makes the decision to go after it, she doesn't really wait around for it to happen. She's too ambitious for that. Instead she'd rather use a combination of deceit, manipulation, and her own wit to _make_ it happen. I'd say by the end of season 5, Catra's still somewhat impatient. She's quick to get upset at mentions of her being cute, physical contact, and Adora's self-sacrificing habit, but she does learn to become more tolerant of these things. She isn't able to keep calm at their appearances, but she does make a conscious choice to put it with it. However, it's not an inherent trait that she already has, but one that she has to learn how to put into practice. Justice: The Hufflepuff moral code and sense of right and wrong and fairness is arguably their most significant defining trait and the fact that Catra doesn't have that is the biggest argument for why she's not a Puff. Like you said, she cares about the person, not the cause (funnily enough, all the Horde defectors are like that, with the exception of Adora. They all value something else over the idea of right and wrong). Even when Catra switched sides, her motivation was not because it was the right thing to do, but because it meant Adora would be safe. The motivation for her "one good thing" was wholly driven by the well being of someone she cared deeply about. You know what house tends to follow and do things for people close to them, regardless of right or wrong? Slytherin. It goes back to that idea of fraternity. Slytherins say "I'm going to have your back regardless of what it is you're trying to do because you're my person". They're the type of people who'll help you bury the body without even asking where it came from, while Puffs will definitely be concerned with who, how, and why there's a body in the first place. And like I said before, Catra has that ride or die mentality when it comes to the ones she loves. Sidenote: If you think Adora's, not hard-headed, self-sacrificing, and brave and is actually a selfish person, we must not have been watching the same show. Yes, she goes after Catra after Glimmer is saved when there's no reason for her to (at least when it comes to saving the universe), but she has to spend an entire episode coming to terms with the fact that she wants that. She opens the discussion with Glimmer about it by starting with all the reasons why she _shouldn't_ go and then she can't even bring herself to say it. Glimmer has to say it _for her_ by phrasing it like a question she already knows the answer to and the only way Adora can respond is by nodding with her head hanging, like the guilt of wanting something for herself is killing her. This is the first time in the _entire series_ that we EVER see Adora want something for herself that doesn't involve She-ra and her destiny, the rebellion, or the overall goal of protecting Etheria. It's the first act of hers that's entirely based on what matters to her personally and has no bearing on the rest of the world. Don't see how you can think Adora's a selfish person when this is the first selfish thing we've seen her do in 4 seasons (and 3 episodes).
A. Johnson
A. Johnson 3 ай мурун
@Brandon Flowers Adora was working towards being a Force Captain cause that's what Shadow Weaver was grooming her for. If it had been that important to her personally, she wouldn't have thrown it all away to defect to the rebellion. Which, I might add, happened because of the realization of a conflict of morality between herself and the Horde. Before Thaymor, Adora truly believed that the Horde were the good guys, and put all her effort into being the model soldier that would save Etheria from the evil Princesses. Once she saw that wasn't the case, she defected to join the _actual_ good guys, even when it meant hurting the person closest to her and leaving all her previous ties behind. Sacrificing it all to do the right thing (something we see Adora doing _constantly_ throughout the show)? I don't know a more Gryffindor mentality than that. Adora is anything BUT ambitious. She is constantly putting her needs and wants last and hardly ever even acknowledges them. When she _does_ acknowledge them, she feels guilty for doing so (like when Glimmer asked her if she wanted to go back for Catra). A truly ambitious person would be doing everything they can to make their personal goals and dreams a reality. The only thing Adora is driven about is doing the right thing, illustrated by the fact that she tends to put the safety of the world/universe over everything, even her life. And I wouldn't say Adora's a good leader exactly. What she is is a good _soldier_ . A good leader is able to make decisions and has to have enough confidence in themselves to stand by those decisions. Adora has a tendency to just follow others' directions. Not only that, she _wants_ to be told what to do because she's extremely unsure of herself. She spends her entire life following Shadow Weaver's direction only to run away and do the same thing for 4 seasons with Light Hope. When Adora first arrives in Bright Moon she, to quote Made Razz, "runs into the woods and asks the first old lady she could find what to do". She's not really in the habit of making decisions for herself. If you wanna get down to core values, look at the other side too. Griffs are described as brave, courageous, chivalrous, and daring. The difference between bravery and courage is small, but it's there. Bravery is being able to face tough situations without fear and courage is being able to face them in spite of fear. Adora is both. She is brave almost to the point of stupidity or recklessness, as seen by her jumping headfirst into situations without regard for the consequences (i.e. the sea monster in "The Sea Gate", rushing the Prime bots despite not being able to transform) and she had enough courage to break away from her pre-determined "destiny" given by the First Ones, despite not knowing what the future would hold for her after that. (Given that having a "destiny" was something that Adora viewed as comforting, breaking away from it must have been terrifying for her.) The daring kind of ties in with Adora's bravery, but if you need an example, you can look at her stealing the keys for a skiff and taking it for a joyride. Or you can look at her actions as a kid (arguably a time where she was at her truest self, before years of Shadow Weaver's influence and the pressure of living up to expectations) when she purposefully antagonized someone much older and bigger than her (Octavia) as well as suggested going into a place where she knew she wasn't allowed (the Black Garnet room) and then actually went in. As for chivalry, well... Like I said before, self-sacrifice for others and doing the right thing is Adora's whole deal. She's got chivalry coming out of her ears. Never seen a more textbook Griff.

@ChasehaWing If being goal focused makes you "ambitious", then every single character in the show is ambitious. Everyone has some sort of goal they're working toward; that's not what we mean when we call somebody _ambitious._ To be ambitious means to want more for yourself and actively work to get it- more power, more money, more status etc. It can be for good reasons or for bad reasons, but that's what ambition is. Again: Adora's arc is literally that she puts everyone else first to such a degree that she doesn't even consider what she wants for herself, which is the opposite of being ambitious. Adora is the opposite of selfish. She's self-sacrificing to a harmful degree. That idea is just not true. Her actions are entirely selfless.

Truth is, other than the moment at the Princess Ball I never once thought these two would end up together, I thought they were just best friends separated by fate and their own choices, heck at one point I shipped Catra with Scorpia! But even though I never saw this coming, when it happened, I was happy! Catra had been redeemed and made amends with Adora, it was clear Catra loved Adora near the end but she wasn’t gonna say anything ... then she had to to save Adora’s life! I cheered when they kissed and now I am Team Catradora for Life 😍😍😍 Thanks for a great vid and stay safe Tom 💙🐱💙

I think the points you made are spot on. I also think people are not good or bad, I think "being a good person" is a state of being in a moment not a title. A verb instead of an adjective. Catra wasn't being a good person but made the choice to change the actions she was taking that were keeping her from being a better person. I think a lot of people want to say she was just toxic and be done with her but the show was giving us a incredibly important message. Catra was abused and didn't know HOW to be a good person, She abused others because she was abused and that is what she knew. That was wrong and when she was confronted with that information it changed her whole world. When she finally realized that the only reason she was actually unhappy was the direct reactions of her actions she started listening to others about how she needed to change in order to be a better person and apologizing for those actions. Adora could make the changes faster because she wasn't as abused by shadoweaver and had friends other than Catra in the horde, where Catra only had Adora.

What I find most important about Catradora is that it shows there is hope for people like Catra. That she still deserves love, can recover from her trauma and can actually be in a healthy relationship. It gives hope for people like her

Yeah I feel identified with catra, it made me feel so much better, like I wanted to stop existing bc everyone expects of me of being a bad person, and watching catra redemption and that ppl can change it made cry bc I was mean to ppl and I don't wanted be it anymore
Ordinary Tree

But only if they actually fix their shit and catch themselves hurting other people. Too many victims of trauma believe they cannot inflict trauma on others because in their heads they are always the victim. Like Catra. Catra needed to realize a lot of things about her behaviour before she could become better. There is a path for people like her, but you cant just say "ah this character was redeemed, I should be redeemed too!" And then not put the same work in that Catra put in. Anyway, just adding on to your point.

I think it is important to show kids every kind of love, no matter if it's hetero, gay or sth else, bc unlike many claim, seeing a gay relationship won't turn them gay, just as seeing hetero relationships doesn't turn them hetero.

When I watched this show, I always felt more of a sister dynamic between to two. When you grow up with someone it tends to happen that you feel like brothers/sisters, so when season 5 came out, it felt like the relationship between the two where completely different from the other seasons. I think this out come would have been better if they hinted the sexual tension in flashbacks to back up this outcome.

I think the way they got together was fine and not really rushed, but at the same time, I feel like it could have been made a bit more clear before the very end. I was surprised they went that route and thought it could have been slowed down and have the reveal spaced through a few more episodes. But that's just my opinion.

Noelle stated that they would have liked it to be more explicit but they didn’t know if they were going to be allowed to have the Catradora ending until season 5. It was hinted at but kept vague before that to prevent any dissatisfaction in case they weren’t. You can tell they went ham on season 5 though.

deltahalo241
deltahalo241 3 ай мурун
@Mastercrazybird Whilst He-Man and She-Ra are both part of the 'Masters of the Universe' series, they are technically seperate IPs. Mattel/Dreamworks had plans for He-Man (A sequel movie to the original series and a new reboot TV series) So they didn't want to loan out the IP to Netflix, She-Ra however, they didn't have anything planned for, so they agreed to loan Netflix that IP on the grounds that He-Man and its characters don't make an appearance. Any future crossover between the two will be up to Netflix and Mattel/Dreamworks (Though they could theoretically create a new seperate version of She-Ra if they wanted to, unless there's a clause against that in their agreement with Netflix)
Mastercrazybird
Mastercrazybird 3 ай мурун
@Kenneth Pomeroy wait... how does that work? Like, legally. Wouldn't He-Man, She-Ra, and the rest be under the same property license because they both came out at the same time as part of the same media property?
Kenneth Pomeroy
Kenneth Pomeroy 3 ай мурун
I believe it gets mentioned that there might still be "First Ones" some where in the universe. Even though they didn't have the legal permissions to use He Man in this show it can be assumed that he and the rest of Adora's family could be out in the universe somewhere. Its possible that the more PG of the two He Man shows coming out could crossover with this She Ra one day.

But you made it much clearer hope she can understand better now.
