While some Nickelodeon cartoons like Avatar: the Last Airbender feel timeless, some cartoons feel designed to throw us back into a particular period of our lives, oozing with nostalgia. Hey Arnold is one of those shows. Why does the setting, stories and wonderful cast of characters such as Arnold, Gerald, Helga, Grandpa Phil and Gertie give off such a strong sensation of the 90s and 2000s? Well, let's talk about why Hey Arnold makes us nostalgic!

Nickelodeon in the late 90s and early 2000s was amazing. Diverse characters, true role models and interesting stories. I wish there was more of that for today's Nickelodeon era.

I honestly think Hey Arnold is the 90's version of Steven Universe with a little less fantasy, and also the animated version of Friends. A lot of stuff from the 90's is nostalgic because we long for life to be simpler but also media from that time is sometimes problematic. Hey Arnold is top tier animation for me though - I love the feeling I get watching it.

Hey Arnold the movie was a great addition to the series, but they left out so many plot holes that you might have thought it might be coming back. Regardless hey Arnold has been an important part of my childhood, from funny episodes to the scary ones( the headless carriage driver scared the shit out of me and still does). You would think being a kid in Tanzania the show might not have been relatable but it was.

The smartphones and laptops in the movie annoy me whenever I see them. I mean I assume that Hey Arnold takes place in the year 1996, they could have gone one year after Then they could have gotten cellphones and bulky laptops, but no, let's just skip all the way to 2017 and they have smartphones and flat laptops. At least make it a coherent timeline and quit trying to please the small kids with their devices! Sorry, I got mad. Also, I'm not a boomer, I'm seventeen but I like to be old fashioned. 😆

I was born in the late 90’s, so I didn’t get to experience the same time period the show was set in. It came out a year before I was before, but I still grew up in a similar era where technology wasn’t anywhere near it was today but it was slightly more prominent. Watching Hey Arnold, even today, still brings me back to the days when I didn’t have to worry about work and college, where I was a free kid able to do whatever I wanted and get into all sorts of adventures with my brother and my friends. It’s so different today when my best friend and I go out and just drive down to San Fran for the day, or hang out in Nevada just driving through the desert. Back when we were kids the farthest we went was down the street and would race each other back up to his house. Hey Arnold brings back those simpler times of kids just being kids and trying to survive in a crazy world. Sometimes I just get random memories of stuff from when I was younger; like seeing Nintendo release the Camecube or the DS, or playing Diablo 2 on the massive block computers, or recording an episode of the Magic School Bus on a VHS Tape before heading out to school. Nostalgia is a heck of a drug, and Hey Arnold does that phenomenally.

Nostalgia is definitely a big part of the reason why I love Hey Arnold! so much, but I can honestly say that it's just a great show all around. I do get what you said when you pointed out how the modernization that we saw take place in The Jungle Movie seemed natural, but at the same time a little out of place. That's why I think a lot of reboots of old shows, especially cartoons fall flat. People try to adapt the story to the current times, and it either feels weird or maybe even a little preachy depending on the themes and issues the reboot tries to tackle. I honestly wouldn't want a Hey Arnold! reboot because the story is already done, and I don't think there's a better way to tell it. Having said that, I do view Craig of the Creek as a kind of spiritual successor to Hey Arnold! mainly do to the fact that it's able to portray a story from a kid's point of view in this era. The way the kids interact with each other feels realistic because kids play by their own set of rules and live in their own world whenever they hang out with their friends, and the way they make use of smart phones or talk about specific pop culture references is a perfect reflection of real life.

RE: Gerald they could have had a diverse writing room in order to have those stories told, even if they weren’t Gerald’s story because in all reality it is a breath of fresh air to not see a Black character written simply to struggle... but because there are those that do and did in the past it would have been good to incorporate. But hindsight is 20/20 and I still really enjoyed Hey! Arnold. ❤️

sasamichan Ай мурун
Hey Arnold when it came out was current, modern. Watching it now its the 90s, the past. but I don't think it should be defined by its era. You can't just lock characters in to the 90s and not expect them to age out of it. Hey Arnold was the characters and there relationships. If you watch Peanuts cartoons you'll see the phone updated from rotary dial to push button and the typewriter replaced by the computer and even topics shifted to be more up to date. You'll see similar shifts with Muppets and Scobey Doo and you'll likely see it again in the Animaniacs reboot or if they ever reboot rugrats. You know what happens when a show tries to never change? characters don't age, they don't move forward, they don't develop and rather then be an accurate period piece, a show about the 90s created in the 2010s becomes a parody of the 90s. A messed up time line of pop stars and Jurassic Park and SNES and Pogs and Beanie Babies all jumbled in to an out of order time line. I like it when a series comes back and the 4th graders are now 5th graders or 6th graders. I like Rugrats All grown up, New Doug, might like the PPG live action reboot. I liked Young Justice's time skip. What I don't like is going back to the past and watching Captain Archer destroy Captain Picard's continuity. So yah I like the characters. giving them cell phones doesn't ruin them farther thought Hey Arnold was of its time. it was 90s because it was made in the 90s it would have been happy in any era. but Arnold doesn't surround him self with 90s. Rocket Power and Tiny Toons, these shows are the ones that are deep in the 90s. Arnold was more every man. Peanuts is a lot of the 60s and 70s and some times 80s and 90s but only because it was from the era there are no Nicktoons for the 80s or sooner since they didn't exist that far back. but there are shows like Punky Brewster that is full of 80s and Archie is full of the 50s and Loud house is full of the 2000s and is what Arnold may have been if Arnold had been a 2000s show. I wonder what shows would have worked out side there era? Like Fat Albert is very 60s/70s but that's when the show was made. and I wonder are there shows that are set in a past era that are accurate to it? I frequently see shows that are set in the past that have the edge of the 2010s and when I see modern lingo slip in to a period piece Im like, they didn't talk like that back then. I don't think we have a show that's stuck in the past. shows evolve.

I don't think any other cartoon on any channel at that time had so much depth to it's characters. _Avatar: The Last Airbender_ and _Gravity Falls_ are the only shows that have ever surpassed _Hey Arnold!_ in the decades since. No other has even come close. What's also remarkable is how Hey Arnold had no overarching story tying it all together. It was just a series of short stories, each a day in the life of the characters. Even Arnold's quest to find his missing parents was just one story out of hundreds told over the course of the series. That is an incredible feat, keeping the audience invested using the characters alone, with no main plot to tie everything together.

Why do “Hey Arnold: The Jungle Movie “and “Dora the Explorer and the lost city of Gold” have the same plot. A classic Nicktoon revival movie where the main character and their friends go to find their lost parents in an ancient Mayan and Incan inspired lost city. The villain is someone posing as the lost parents best friend to get the treasure of the lost city. There is also a romantic subplot and a third act breakup where the friends lose trust in the protagonist.

I know they do have similarities in the plot. Actually, there has been a lot of jungle movies these past few years and more after 2017. Like, The Legend Of Tarzan (2016) Jungle Book (2016) Jungle (2017) Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle (2017) Hey Arnold! The Jungle Movie (2017) Mogali: The Legend Of The Jungle (2018) Dora And The Lost City Of Gold (2019) Jumanji: Next Level (2019) Jungle Cruise (2021) The point is that the Hey Arnold!: Jungle Movie script was already written around 2001, but unfortunately because the first movie didn't do well as expected and Graig Bartlett disobeyed one of the rules of nick, which was working for another studio. Graig was working for Cartoon Network, so he left Nickelodeon studios. Then all the scripts and concept art of the jungle movie were put away until 2016, they only made some changes but it was basically the original script. Sooooo, Hey Arnold came first 😊
IG88IGLOO Ай мурун
I haven't seen the Dora movie but someone probably realized it but both might have been too far in development to change one or the other. You could also say that the audiences might not mix as much. Dora seems to be very kid oriented but with jokes that might make it bareable for parents (judging by the trailer iirc). While the Jungle movie seems to target older fans growing up with the show. Which I guess did work on me.

They Arnold jungle movie was a shitty white savior story that made Gerald into a racist stereotype and not a person. I was extremely disappointed in it, considering how huge fan I am of the show. Also, even though Helga is my favorite character and I love that she loves Arnold, I cannot condone how they got together in the end. Like, what? She was abusing him the whole time and he’s just like, “LOL OK I knew that you liked me the whole time and i love you so let’s kiss?” Am I living in the twilight zone? What is this? What are we teaching kids? There was zero indication that Arnold returned her feelings at any point in even if he was kind of into her that still doesn’t mean that they should get together in the end. Like what the fuck... she needs therapy not a boyfriend.... so yeah, love the show, hate the movie.
