The Roundtable

2 ай мурун

Nickelodeon has had plenty of dark moments in shows such as Invader Zim, Danny Phantom and Hey Arnold, but when you lay it all down, there's an animated family not full of just dark moments, but can be viewed as the darkest family on Nickelodeon. We're of course talking about The Wild Thornberrys and their meme of a father, Nigel Thornberry. How so? Well we're going to go through some of the best moments that highlight this thesis to break it all down.

Is it twisted or has our perception of reality gotten darker and more concerned than necessary of many things? It feels as if society has really shifted to being concerned over accepting things as they are. It feels more often people want to fix than to accept

I always imagined that Eliza goes on to work a series of veterinary and zoo jobs as a teen and eventually becomes a beloved famous animal scientist/preservationist, similar to Jane Goodall or Steve Irwin. I always wanted to see a live action movie where that happens. I don't remember the name of it, right this second, but there was a theater group in New York that actually did a hypothetical scene that could be from the show, and it was amazing. It's on KGpost. Look up "live action Thornberries"

Side note: Nigel and Marianne are BOTH adult parents to these kids. Don’t one sided hate on the mom. dads should be just as concerned with their kids well being. Nigel is horrifically neglectful as a father. Men being adult children is NOT a new or unique trope in animation or sitcoms (Peter griffin is a great example). Trust me, as someone who had a parent who never grew up and treated me like a buddy rather than ever actually parented, you do not want a man child for a father. Otherwise, good breakdown of the show.

I rewatched the show a few months ago and for the first few seasons I felt that the situation was really bad for donny. He was raised for awhile by monkeys and should be integrated back into human society and wasnt being, but after awhile I changed my mind abit. Donnie is really young, I think he starts out as 2 and is 4 at the end of the show, but I not sure. So things like refusing to wear clothes is normal for that age. And they do make him wear clothes when they go into cities and colder enviorments. He is obviously attached to the family so separating them could be bad for him, especially with his backstory. And moving him directly into a urban environment could freak him out. I think the back and forth could be good. And finally, I think the parents do have a routine set for him. More than once you see debby have to settle him down for his bedtime and read to him, and I think that's probably somthing Marianne set to help him learn, as you see her read to him once too.

The reason why they was filming Donnie, is because he was raised in the wilderness. So him knowing how to set a dinner table. Surprised them because he was raised in the wilderness.

My brother, what kind of research you was doing. I remember this show and I remember them saying in the show. That if she ever told everyone that she could talk to animals. She would just lose the ability to talk to animals. You would have known that if you actually paid attention to the first episode.

So let me get this straight. The mom (who has a NAME, Marianne) is a failure as a mother, and Nigel is the ideal dad. Um... Nigel is also taking his kids around the world, putting them in dangerous situations, and keeping them from school just as much as the mom is. You even pointed out how Nigel was the one who turned down living in Europe to Debbie's detriment. You have got to check your sexism at the door.

Question: (Now keep in mind that I watched the show when I first aired and not all the episodes) The last season or two Debbie knew that Eliza could talk to animals. I always figured that she saw Eliza interacting with a animal and then Eliza told Debbie. I see from your video that the world would be destroyed. Why wasn't the world destroyed?

Watching this show always left me with one question, it’s stated that Eliza can’t tell anybody about her powers or she’ll lose them but in the episode Dances with Dingos Debbie almost discovers Elizas secret so basically what I’m wondering is if someone were to find out about her powers by accident without being told about them would she still lose them or would she be allowed to keep them do to a technicality? Also if you wanna see a Nickelodeon show that’s darker than this check out the early seasons of Rugrats! It’s no wonder the tone of the show changed once Kimi was introduced.

The Wild Thornberry's was one of my favorite show's as a kid! I actually remember when I was younger the movie was playing on tv but I had to leave with my family because we were going to the store or something. I ended up missing the movie and got sad because I actually wasn't sure what the movie was called or how I could watch it since we didn't record it to the DVR (this all happened when I was like 7). Then, years later I finally remembered about the movie and got a chance to watch the whole thing. I love the movie so much and would rank it as one of my favorite of all time!

"Wild Thornberrys is the Darkest Nickelodeon Family" mostly being glib about the family's unusual dynamic when I thought it was going to cover their darkest episodes like: -Eliza wandering away from Nigel in the Machu Picchu mountains and the latter having to find her before she succumbed to hypothermia and severe altitude sickness. -Nigel getting poisoned by a stonefish barb and Eliza having to find the medical kit with the antitoxin lost in a swamp before things turn fatal. -An elderly elephant Nigel saved from poachers years ago passing away. -"The Origin of Donnie" which explores why Donnie was found in the jungle, but reiterates poachers are bad for not only going after vulnerable species but also because they're ruthless and dangerous. -Eliza exploring an African forest that's the subject of a generations old ghost story, getting lost, and slowly believing herself to be haunted by the forest's past victim: a girl close to Eliza's age. Episode ends with the image of the ghost girl, illuminated by the moonlight, before breaking apart to reveal it was made up of the tree canopy.

Wow you did a bad job explaining why her power is secret. So she saved a shaman and he granted her wish "I want to talk to animals." Unfortunately this came at the cost of talking to humans, so she had it undone. But the shaman felt bad about this and was like "Okay look. There is a 'talk to animals AND humans' spell but I suck at casting it and its fragile. If any human finds out it breaks so keep it secret."

I think you're way too harsh on Mrs. Thornberry. I always felt she was tough, but fair. And Debbie is just annoying... I get that she wants to have a normal childhood, but she really should've been more like Eliza and learned to make the most of her situation. Instead all she does is endlessly complain. She gets to accompany her parents on a never-ending globe trotting adventure and rather than take advantage, explore, and see the sights, she sits in the convee all day and does nothing.
